Joan Sutherland “La Stupenda” Opera Singer Dead at 83
October 11th, 2010 - 11:42 pm ICT by Angela Kaye MasonOct 11 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Joan Sutherland, the Australian born opera star who was known as “La Stupenda” has passed away at the age of eighty-three in her home near Geneva.
Widely known as the best opera singer of her time, Sutherland made her debut in 1947. AT that time she was ‘Dido’ in ‘Dido and Aeneas’. She went on the spend decades singing at opera houses in both Europe and the United States.
Opera was a much greater part of society in her time that it was today, and she was a frequent star of both the ‘Tonight Show’ and ‘The Ed Sullivan Show’. She retired in 1990 with 48 operas, and 60 albums under her belt. See he performance in the video below.
