Joan Sutherland dies at the age of 83 years

Los Angeles, Oct 11 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Joan Sutherland has died at the age of 83 years.

Joan who was known among her fans as “La Stupenda”. The record label of the Australian star announced the death on Monday.

The Sunday Morning Herald quoted family sources as saying the singer died peacefully in the early hours of Sunday after a long illness.

The newspaper quoted her sister-in-law Helen as saying “She’s a very important person all over the world, but for us this is our family and we are just coming to terms with it [her death]”. Reports suggest that the soprano star died in Switzerland.

Joan made her stage debut in 1951 and proceeded from there to perform at most of the great opera houses throughout the world. The singer had a 40-year illustrious career that included the last show at The Royal Opera House in London on the eve of the 1989 New Year.

During her last performance, the star performed alongside Luciano Pavarotti who described her after the show as the “greatest voice of the century.”

After her retirement, Joan served as a judge in most of the singing competitions worldwide. She was also involved in nurturing young talents around the globe.
