Japanese, Syrian journalists killed in clashes
August 21st, 2012 - 5:58 pm ICT by IANSBeirut, Aug 21 (IANS/RIA Novosti) Two Syrian reporters and a Japanese journalist have been killed in Aleppo during armed clashes between government troops and rebels.
Lebanon-based Al-Mayadin TV said Tuesday the reporters were killed in Aleppo’s Meydan district. Their names and the media organisations they were working for have not been released.
On Tuesday, the Japanese embassy in Syria, which is currently located in Jordan, said 45-year-old Japanese journalist Mika Yamamoto was killed in Aleppo. Yamamoto worked for the Japan Press information agency.
The Syrian opposition says three reporters, one Turkish and two Arab, have disappeared in the country.
They are not the first journalists to lose their lives or go missing in the current Syrian conflict.
In February, veteran US war correspondent Marie Colvin, who had been working for The Sunday Times of London, and a young French photographer, Remi Ochlik, were killed in shelling in the rebel-held city of Homs.
Since March 2011, the Syrian conflict has claimed up to 20,000 lives, according to estimates by various Syrian opposition groups.
