James Wall Dies At 92, Immortalizing Mr. Baxter

james-wallOct 30, (THAINDIAN NEWS) James wall, who made himself immortal with the role of Mr. Baxter, in the famous children’s show “Captain Kangaroo”, died on Wednesday at the age of 92 after a short illness. He was the first African American to play a character in the well known children show. He is survived by his 58 year old wife, Dolly Wall. .

James Wall died in his sleep after a short period of illness. He reportedly expired during his sleep at his Manhattan home on Wednesday. The friendly neighbor of ‘Captain Kangaroo’, Mr. Baxter was actually his own brain child, as he convinced CBS to create the first black character for the show. He has been the stage manager of “Captain Kangaroo” since 1962, and he was introduced in the show as his signature character in the year 1968 and continued till 1978. He has served CBS for 50 years, as a stage manager in several shows. He also continued with his services after his retirement at the age of 71. He became the fill-in stage manager for several well known CBS shows like 60 Minutes and CBS Evening news, until 2009, till the age of 91.

James Wall was one of the senior most persons working for CBS. He was well adored and revered by every one. The entire CBS crew knew about his unique style, while managing the stage of “60 minutes”. Every one is also aware of his wonderful life history with full of incidences and several ups and downs. James Wall was born in the year December 12, 1917, in Wilmington, N.C. He shifted to New York with his parents at the age of nine. He started working as a sea man at a very young age, and even involved in staging USO shows in Europe during World War 2.
