LOS ANGELES (BNO NEWS) — Dr. Conrad Murray, the personal physician of Michael Jackson, was charged with involuntary manslaughter in connection with the entertainer’s death last summer, prosecutors said.
The court alleged that Murray did “unlawfully, and without malice, kill Michael Joseph Jackson [..] in the commission of an unlawful act, not amounting to a felony; and in the commission of a lawful act which might have produced death, in an unlawful manner, and without due caution and circumspection.”
Murray is scheduled to be arraigned later Monday at the Airport Court on La Cienega Boulevard in Las Vegas. He is expected to surrender himself there around 1.30 p.m. PST, according to his lawyer.
Los Angeles Deputy District Attorney David Walgren of the Major Crimes Division will prosecute the case. Walgren worked closely with the investigative agencies, such as the Los Angeles Police Department and the Los Angeles County Coroner’s Office. “Both agencies worked diligently and exhaustively to collect the evidence leading to filing of the case,” the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office said in a statement.
“Dr. Conrad Murray’s defense team is prepared to surrender him at the Airport Courthouse at 1.30 pm [PST],” his defense team said in a brief statement earlier on Monday. It said Murray’s lawyer, Ed Chernoff, will hold a news conference outside the court after the arraignment.
If Murray is convicted on the single count, he faces a maximum four year state prison term.
Jackson, who was 50, died at his Los Angeles home on June 25. The Los Angeles County Coroner ruled his death a homicide, mainly caused by the powerful anaesthetic Propofol.
