ABC’s hard-hitting medical drama Grey’s Anatomy ended with a tear-jerker in a 2-hour finale, with two long-standing characters taking the bow.

Though theatrically dramatic and a stunner in it’s own right, the exit of Katherine Heigl,as the headstrong(and commonly considered insufferable) resident Izzie Stevens of Seattle Grace Hospital, may not have been a complete bolt from the blue.

Industry grapevine had been abuzz with speculations about the duration of Kath’s continuing association with the show, given her rumored decision to concentrate on movies.The continuation of the show for 5 seasons had meant that most of the characters, and that of Izzie in particular, had had to be subjected to numerous twists and turns, one of which eventually she succumbs to.

The emotion-riddled finale saw a failing, cancer-stricken Izzie struggling through post-operative complications that slowly ebb away her memory.

With Alex ever present by her side and urging her on in the face of obvious despair, she slips into unconsciousness. While doctors scramble to resuscitate her in spite of her earlier opposition to DNR, she slowly fades away. In a dying flash of memory, she sees herself back in the infamous prom-episode in her stained dress, entering an elevator, where she meets George O’ Malley, another member of the series cast and her one-time flame who too makes an exit from the series in the same episode.Meredith’s thought provoking voice-over sounds the ending notes of despair, as Grey’s Anatomy turns a shade grayer.
