In Shopia Gokey’s MemoryMay 14th, 2009 - 11:54 pm ICT by GD
His performance broke the strongest of hearts, and to think that she died of an ailing one….Danny Gokey’s swan song on Wednesday’s episode, a first ever all-male top-3 show of American Idol, was clearly a poignant dedication to the memory of Sophia Gokey, his late young wife whom he lost to congenital heart disorder last summer.
Danny’s heartbreaking rendition of Joe Crocker’s “You are so beautiful” and the relaxed composure with which he watched it being aired in his goodbye video, left many a listener misty-eyed, notably judges Paula Abdul and Kara Dio Guardi.
The tragic fate of Danny Gokey’s young 27-year-old wife had touched a chord, with the masses who couldn’t but sympathize with the young, passionate widower whose vibrant, beautiful, young wife sucummbed to complications that developed following a seemingly routine procedure to install a pacemaker.
More tragic still, was the fact that, the surgery was partly to improve her health, to prepare her to start a family, according to her close friend Elvira Marko. Born Sophia Linnete Martinez (and therefore Danny’s connection to Latin music) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin on Aug 16, 1980, Sophia or “Sophie” as friends knew her, was Danny’s inspiration to go on, even when she herself couldn’t any longer. “When she died, he didn’t know if he wanted to do it. So we all encouraged him. That’s what Sophie would’ve done.Just do it”, said family member Sonja Gonzales. And he did.
As he stood there, with his hand on his chin, cool and poised , while the the audience imagined him swept up in a tide of overwhelming emotion, one couldn’t help but wonder, whether she herself would have wanted him to pick that very song.
