movieLos Angeles, July 8, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Will Sir Ian McKellen play the role of Gandalf in “The Hobbit” no more? If the latest reports are to be believed then he will not. The 71 year old actor has decided to quit, saying that he wants to work in several other interesting projects that are coming his way rather than wait for the filming of “The Hobbit” to begin.

Ian McKellen had appeared in a recent theatre production “Waiting For Godot” and since then he has expressed a desire to work in more plays. Defending himself, the 71 year old actor said that it is not that he is bound by any kind of contract with the producers of “The Hobbit”, that he is enjoying working on theater productions and so would like to move on in life. Sir Ian McKellen also revealed that an announcement by the producers very soon in the future will reveal the production status of “The Hobbit”.

With Guillermo del Toro, the director of the original version of “The Hobbit” already opting out of the film citing reasons of delay in production work, and now actor Ian McKellen expressing the same desire, it looks like “The Hobbit” is in serious trouble.

David Yates of the “Harry Potter” fame has been roped in as the new director of “The Hobbit”. Production work on the new film though has still not started and it is feared that if MGM causes further delays, Sir Ian McKellen will no longer be back in action as our favorite Gandalf The Grey.
