I Am Sam: Parents AnswerableJune 20th, 2009 - 9:20 pm ICT by GD
I Am Sam, directed by Jessie Nelson, is a touching tale of a father, Sam, who leaves no stones unturned to retain the custody of his daughter, Lucy. Lucy is played by the wonder child actress Dakota Fanning, who has contributed a lot to cinema with her remarkable roles in War of the Worlds, Charlotte’s Web and many more.
The storyline of I Am Sam is heart rending, as it talks about a father who is mentally challenged, equal to that of a 7 year old boy. Now, practically how can a 7 year old boy take care of a growing girl, who has already surpassed the mental age of the father at present. That is where the twist in the movie starts as the court questions Sam on his ability to take care of the child. The trial takes place and Sam invariably is proved incapable of taking care of the child, which is why Lucy is moved to a family who plan to adopt her. Lucy becomes restless and runs back to her father every night, but Sam places her back to the house she is destined to live. Ultimately the foster family returns Lucy to Sam, after realizing that Lucy cannot live without her father.
Critics have commented that Michelle Pfeiffer gives the most amazing performance in this movie and Sean Penn is undoubtedly the best actor of current times. Famous critic Joel Siegel said “A wonderful movie about the power of the human spirit”.
