Homer Simpson June 2, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): According to Entertainment Weekly Survey, the doughnut lover, beer-swilling, head of the Simpson family has been voted the most recognizable and greatest character created for TV and Film for the past 20 years. The character is basically based on the English journalist Vanessa Feltz. Her love of eating inspired Matt Groening to pen the character of Homer Simpson. He created the character when he was visiting London and ate in the same restaurant, where Feltz used to go. When Feltz was asked to comment on Homer gaining new accolade, she refused, as she was busy eating doughnuts.

The famous yellow doofus from the long-running US cartoon series has beaten the wizard school boy Harry Potter, though he is more of a book character rather than a film character.

The list of the top 10 characters was released on Monday, on the 20th anniversary of Entertainment Weekly. Here are the top ten characters who had participated in the poll.

1. Homer Simpson- The Simpsons
2. Harry Potter
3. Buffy Summers- Buffy the vampire slayer

5. The Joker- The Dark Knight
6. Rachel Green- Friends
7. Edward Scissorhands
8. Hannibal Lecter- The Silence of the Lambs
