Hindraf demands ISA abolition, its leaders proper medical treatment
May 12th, 2008 - 4:21 pm ICT by adminKuala Lumpur, May 12 (ANI): Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) supporters have staged nationwide protests demanding proper medical treatment for Hindraf leader P. Uthayakumar, freedom for Internal Security Act (ISA) detainees and abolition of the ISA.
Seven protestors were arrested at the police district headquarters in Penang. Bloggers Sathis Kumar, 27, and Ong Boon Keong, 48, were arrested in front of the Gurney Plaza shopping complex on Gurney Drive.
Suaram Penang’s Lau Shu Shi and Teh Chun Hong were among those arrested for obstructing police from carrying out their duties.
Gerakan Mansuhkan ISA’s (GMI) Sudhagaran Stanley, 23, and two others from Makkal Sakti, were arrested about half an hour later after the police finished recording their statements on illegal assembly.
George Town OCPD Asst Comm Azam Abd Hamid said he was informed that about 30 people were taking part in an assembly without a permit near the Gurney Drive roundabout, and he directed his men to disperse the group.
Hindraf co-ordinator R.S. Thanenthiran said the demonstration would be held every Sunday until Uthayakumar was referred to hospital for treatment.
Hindraf supporters staged a peaceful demonstration in other parts like Butterworth, Seremban, Ipoh and Johor Baru, according to the staronline. (ANI)
