Helen Philips, 48, retired retail manager and mother of two from Sterling Heights, Mich., took home $250,000 and a brand new confidence when she was announced the winner at the season finale of The Biggest Loser: Couples. Philips lost 54.47% of her previous 257 pounds to weigh 117 pounds, followed by Mike Morelli, who dropped 53.35% to get to 181 pounds from 388 pounds and Tara Costa who went to 139 pounds from 294 pound and lost 52.72% of her initial weight.

On being told how much she had lost, Philips said on the show, “140 pounds! Yes! Yes! I haven’t worn a dress in at least 10 years”. It was just wonderful. I actually feel beautiful today. I haven’t felt that in a really long time.”

Contestants and trainers reminisced about the 20 hard weeks of hopeless dejection, tears, yelling, and unrelenting workouts. Helen and Tara had already secured their places in the top three with last week’s weigh ins and Ron and Mike Morelli vied for the third spot. Mike, 18, the youngest ever contestant on the show said, “I’m freaking out…this is really crazy” while his father Ron said he “really hoped” that his son would make it to the top three. When Mike did make it, Ron was left to vie with the other contestants for the other prize of $100,000. Mike came in with the biggest weight loss, but was just 1.12% short of the big percentage figure.

At the end of the show, Helen said that the money would help at a time of crisis because her husband’s job at Chrysler was now threatened with Chrysler entering bankruptcy.
