Heavy metal legend Ronnie James Dio has died

Ronnie James Dio LOS ANGELES, CALIFORNIA (BNO NEWS) — American heavy metal vocalist and songwriter Ronnie James Dio, 67, died Sunday morning after a battle with stomach cancer, his wife announced.

“Today my heart is broken, Ronnie passed away at 7:45am 16th May. Many, many friends and family were able to say their private good-byes before he peacefully passed away,” Dio’s wife Wendy said.

“Ronnie knew how much he was loved by all. We so appreciate the love and support that you have all given us. Please give us a few days of privacy to deal with this terrible loss. Please know he loved you all and his music will live on forever.”

Ronnie James Dio is best known for replacing Ozzy Osbourne in the heavy metal band, Black Sabbath in 1979. Dio joined the band “Heaven and Hell” in 2006 with fellow Black Sabbath members Tony Lommi, Geezer Buttler, and Vinny Appice.

He was diagnosed with stomach cancer on November 25, 2009.

In early May 2010, Heaven and Hell made the announcement that all summer dates were to be cancelled because of Dio’s illness.
