“Heartless”: A soulful number from Kris Allen

Kris Allen desperately needed a comeback song to stake his claim firmly on the final spot on American Idol, and on Tuesday night, he hit the right chord. He performed Kara’s pick “Apologize” rather well, and then boldly went on to perform Kanye West’s “Heartless” in a way that had the critical Simon Cowell exclaim that Kris may have won himself the top two spot.

Allen got rid of the all the Auto-tuning of the originals to belt out a more bare version of the song, in the soulful manner of those amazingly talented singers you often heat by the sidewalk cafes. The song sounded like touching bossa nova, and very different from the original track from West’s 2008 release 808’s and Heartbreak. Kanye West himself made a bold move when he recorded the song as a shift from his rap numbers to sing the processed vocals. The song had appeared on American Idol before when West sang it himself on March 11 before the results. The song goes, “Somewhere far along this road he lost his soul/ To a woman so heartless …/ How could you be so Dr. Evil?/ You bringin’ out a side of me that I don’t know/ I decided we weren’t gon’ speak so/ Why we up 3 a.m. on the phone?”and has been directed by the hip-hop ace director Hype Williams. It is said to be a tribute to the legendary Ralph Bakshi’s animated film “American Pop”.

Earlier, the Fray had also taken the song and turned it around to an acoustic ballad, in a move appreciated by West. Kanye West is yet to announce his impression of Allen’s version of the song.
