Grant wants assisted suicide to be made legal
June 5th, 2011 - 7:09 pm ICT by IANSLondon, June 5 (IANS) Actor Hugh Grant wants assisted suicide to be made legal in Britain so that the terminally ill can die with dignity.
Grant is patron of Healthtalkonline.org, a charity and wellbeing website founded by assisted suicide campaigner Ann McPherson, who died last week after losing her battle with pancreatic cancer.
The 50-year-old paid tribute to the doctor by supporting her calls to make the practice legal in Britain, reports dailystar.co.uk.
“She’s (McPherson) right on assisted dying. That seems to me like the dignified option. I don’t know quite what she wanted in her last few weeks but she was a great champion of the right to die in a dignified manner, which it seems she did. She was a tremendous force for good,” Grant told a newspaper.
Switzerland is one of the few countries in Europe where lawmakers have legalised assisted-suicide along with Belgium, Luxembourg and the Netherlands. However in Britain, a person faces up to 14 years in jail if they are convicted of helping another person kill themselves.
