Gospel Musician Walter Hawkins dies

Ripon, July 12 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The renowned gospel musician, Walter Hawkins has died. The multi award-winning artist was 61 years old.
The musician had been battling pancreatic cancer and his older brother, Edwin Hawkins confirmed that he had passed away at his home in California. Funeral arrangements would be announced later.
The renowned gospel musician was born in 1939 in Oakland. He studied at the University of California for his divinity degree. He recorded his first album at the University in 1972.
After school, Hawkins founded the Love Center Church in Oakland, where he was also the pastor.
During the course of his career as a singer, Hawkins got nine Grammy Award Nominations and his song “The Lord’s Prayer” won the Grammy Award in 1980. That same year, Hawkins also performed at the Grammy Awards.
His 1990 album “Love Alive III” sold more than a million copies and spent 34 weeks on top of the chart of Billboard gospel album sales.
Hawkins became a bishop in October 1992, after which he released his next album “Love Alive IV”. That album was also a major success. Hawkins was still performing in music concerts and before his death, he was planning another “Love Alive” concert.
Two children, two grandchildren and his brother survive him.
