Gloria Estefan buys concert tickets for the jobless

San Juan, Oct 12 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The Cuban born sensational singer Gloria Estefan has a weekend concert in Puerto Rico. And to the recession and lay-offs hit Government officials, she has bought her own concert tickets and distributing it amongst them.

The cost of tickets ranges between $40 and $125 and around 8000 tickets have been sold so far.

The Cuban-born singer bought some 2,000 tickets for her weekend concert and they will distributed by raffle among the nearly 17,000 unlucky workers who learned last month that they will be laid-off from their jobs on Nov. 6.

Stefan bought all the remaining upper-level tickets—at $40 each—as a gift to those who were affected, said Harold Rosario, the singer’s spokesman in Puerto Rico, said Thursday.

Government agencies have got the tickets and they will be given to the lucky winners of a raffle.

According to media reports, the government announced the layoffs in late September as it tries to close the gap on a $3.2 billion deficit. The U.S. territory is struggling with its third year of recession with a 15 percent unemployment rate, higher than any U.S. state.

The 1975 born Gloria is a Grammy Award-winning Cuban-American singer and songwriter. She is in the top 100 best selling music artists with over 90 million albums sold worldwide and she has also won 7 Grammy awards.
