‘G.I. Joe’ tops box office collections

Aug 10 (IBNS) Despite all the initial apprehensions G.I. Joe has stunned everyone by winning the weekend with $56.2 million, among the best August openings in history for a non-sequel.

A month after the record-breaking opening of “Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen,” the team of Paramount and game-maker Hasbro have proved yet again that toys are here for serious business.

The film stars Channing Tatum, Dennis Quaid and Sienna Miller. The multi-starrer action packed movie overcame bad buzz and scathing reviews to win the box office war this weekend.

The win also adds box office clout to the careers of stars Channing Tatum (”Fighting”) and Sienna Miller (”Stardust”), who both scored career bests.

Paramount Pictures decided against screening the movie for critics beforehand. The movie is tipped to be the biggest movie of the summer. Only a select few writers from globs and movie Web sites have seen it for review.

The studio said that its intention is to promote the movie at the heartland, at cities and audiences outside the entertainment vortexes of New York and Los Angeles.

Last week, Paramount organized a special screening of the movie for 1,000 military service members and their families at the Andrews Air Force Base in Camp Springs. They are also targeting to focus on markets like Kansas City, Charlotte, N.C., and Columbus, Ohio.

The second placed movie in the box office was Sony’s foodie film “Julie and Julia,” which earned an appetizing $20.1 million bow from the combined appeal of star Meryl Streep and her character, super-chef Julia Child.

The week’s other new wide release, “A Perfect Getaway,” looks set to make a quick escape from theaters after a disappointing seventh-place debut with $5.8 million.
