George Michaels let off by police over drugs possession sparks fury
September 22nd, 2008 - 1:46 pm ICT by ANILondon, Sept 22 (ANI): Former Wham! frontman George Michael sparked fury when police let him off with just a caution, after he was found with crack cocaine and cannabis.
The decision has been called as appalling by former judge Keith Matthewman QC, who said that the action showed how incompetent the police force was.
I cannot understand how or why someone in his position and with his previous record could be let off with a caution, the Daily Star quoted the retired judge as saying.
It gives the wrong impression to young people who are thinking about drugs or are actually addicted.
I find the decision appalling and dont understand how a force can be so inefficient, he added.
The police, who had arrested Michael, 45, on September 19 from an underground public lavatory near Hampstead Heath, decided not to refer his case to the Crown Prosecution Service, as the singer had shown remorse at his arrest.
Scotland Yard is standing by its decision and has even insisted that there would not be any further action taken against Michael, despite his having had similar run-ins in the past. (ANI)
