July 10, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): Santosh Sivan of Tahaan fame is going to direct a period drama tentatively titled Urumi, which will be a bilingual movie in Malayalam and Tamil. He has signed Genelia D’Souza to play the lead female role of a Portugese princess.
Malayalam actor Prithviraj has been signed opposite Genelia to play the male lead. Urumi, which means a flexible sword, reportedly deals with a group of people, who wanted to kill the Portugese explorer Vasco Da Gama, who stepped in Kappad in Calicut on 1498.
The film is aimed at the international audiences and it is set in the 15th century. The script is being written by Sankar Ramakrishnan, who was the director of Malyalam short film Kerala Cafe.
Urumi is an 8-feet-long long supple sword, which had been used in Kalari fights since long time.
Confirming the news, director Santosh Sivan said, “I have roped in Prthviraj and Genelia for my next film Urumi. It is based on the period of 15th century. It tells the story of a boy, who wanted to kill Vasco Da Gama”.
The shooting of the movie will start in the month of August in Malshej Ghat.
