christian-poveda_200x0Filmaker Christian Poveda, 52, whose controversial documentary film on a nefarious street gang in El Salvador had caused outrage has been shot dead reportedly. He was discovered dead in his car 10 miles from San Salvador, in a rural suburb of Tonacatepeque.Sources report that the director was returning from his shoot in La Campanera when he was mobbed and assaulted by the Mara 18 gang.

La Vida Loca (Crazy Life), was the latest work of Poveda which delineated the pathetic lives of the intricately tattooed Mara 18 clan. Poveda in a recent interview given to the El Faro, an online Salvadoran newspaper, had posed the question as to why a 12-13 year old becomes available to a gang and devotes his life to it. He wanted to portray that section of deprived populace where family problems are so acute that it leads the children of those families to abandon family members and live a life of crusade.

Mara Salvatrucha the rival of the Mara 18 form forms a notorious criminal framework beginning from L.A. and spreading to Central America. There are reportedly about 30000 mareros who are accused of drug-dealing, robbing illegal-migrants, and money extortion.

The French Mauricio Funes, the former Marxist who became President of the El Salvador in June was baffled at the episode and has promised a thorough investigation in the case. The “repugnant and reproachable criminal act” has also got the attention of Manuel Melgar, the public safety minister who has also concerned himself on the case stating that the authorities would tirelessly seek the criminals who committed the murder.
