Nov 6, (THAINDIAN NEWS) “For Colored Girls” have been released yesterday. The film has been inspired from a cult theatrical piece, “For colored girls who have considered suicide/when the rainbow is enuf” by Ntozoke Shange. The movie projects the darker sides of life in a harshly realistic way, with domestic violence, rapes, abuses and struggle. Yet, it may be regarded as a must watch flick of this year, especially for those, who are fascinated towards sensible cinema.
The film has a women centric theme, and most women in the movie are black. In a way, one may consider it to be racially biased as it apparently projects the social harshness and chauvinism that the black women have to confront in their day to day life. However, the truth is, it is not just the blacks but any women might go through the same problems irrespective of their breed and color. All the female protagonists in the film are bound by their personal relationship problems. Crystal played by Kimberly Elise, has an abusive and violent husband, played by Michael Ealy, who is a war veteran and suffers from the post traumatic effect of the war. In the same building, another women, Jo, played by Janet Jackson, is more established in her career and is the editor of a magazine. Her husband has a secret life, which makes her unstable in her life. Juanita (Loretta Devine), is a relationship counselor, but her own relationship is at stake. She is still trying to give it one last chance before she moves on with her life. Yasmine (Anika Noni Rose), however seems happier amongst all, as she is new into a relationship and her boyfriend is coming to her home for the first time.
The film is directed and produced by Tyler Perry. Other star caste include Thandie Newton, Whoopi Goldberg, Kerry Washington and Phylicia Rashad. It has been distributed by Lionsgate and has a total budget of $21 million.
