Florence Nightingale sexually repressed: BBC
September 28th, 2011 - 7:02 pm ICT by IANSLondon, Sep 28 (IANS) The BBC has been accused of demeaning Florence Nightingale by labelling her as a “manipulative, neurotic and sexually repressed woman”, a media report said Wednesday.
Experts have complained to BBC Trust chairman Christopher Patten about a series of documentaries that reportedly belittle the nurse, said the Daily Mail.
The BBC has been accused of “sexism” as it had referred to Nightingale by her first name.
The experts from University College London and the University of Manchester also criticised claims that Nightingale inadvertently killed troops through medical error during the Crimean War.
Led by Lynn MacDonald from the University of Guelph in Canada, the experts urged BBC to withdraw from shops copies of “two hostile films” named “Florence Nightingale: Iron Maiden” and “Reputations: Florence Nightingale”.
A BBC spokesman said the programmes involved a “broad range of sources, giving a broad range of opinions”.
