August 24, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): Cheer-up all you Facebook users, it’s here now! Facebook last week announced the launch of its long awaited location sharing application -”Places.”

At a press conference, the CEO, Mark Zuckerberg informed that the application “Places” will allow mobile phone users to share where they are with their friends, see where their friends are and discover new places around them.

The users of Apple’s iPhone cheered when this new application was made available to them on Wednesday night itself. The users of Smart Phones and BlackBerrys though, will have to wait a little longer, since “Places” for these phones is not out yet. However, they can access the app on their phone’s Web browser, Facebook added.

Mobile location-sharing programs – telling friends where you are when you’re out at a bar or a restaurant, for example – has been a huge success and the leading providers of this application like Foursquare- the leading location sharing site, Gowalla and other providers of the app have enjoyed tremendous growth of the market over the last year. Infact, Foursquare has been registering more than 1 million “check-ins” a week since February. In July, its membership reached 2 million users.

Facebook’s entry in the arena of location-sharing application is expected to have huge impact on the other prominent providers like Google as well. Before launching this location-sharing application, Facebook tried to buy Foursquare earlier this year.
