download1Jan 9, (THAINDIAN NEWS) “The Social Network”, a critically acclaimed film based on the life of Mark Zuckerberg, the Facebook CEO and his secret of rise to stardom, is hogging headlines again. It has become the favorite with Hollywood’s movie critics as is evident from the latest developments. The National Society of Film Critics has picked it as 2010’s Best film and also awarded its screenwriter, actors and director. This win boosts the chance of the film in the Oscar race. Jesse Eisenberg who portrayed the Facebook CEO in the film walked away with the award of best actor. The award season in Hollywood has begun and the Critics’ awards are seen as a stepping stone to the next round of more prestigious awards. While the Critics award selected some of the most successful and acclaimed films of 2010, they shunned some prospective winners like “Black Swan” and the Christian Bale starrer “The Fighter”.

Meanwhile, Columbia Pictures has announced that it will re-release “The Social Network” in almost 600 theaters in the United States. This can also add to the Oscar buzz. Sony Pictures Worldwide Marketing and Distribution Chairman Jeff Blake said that “The Social Network’ has struck a chord with audiences all around the world. Facebook is hugely popular with its 550 million plus users and it helped the movie get enough pre-release buzz later turning the flick into a must-watch for its ardent followers.

So far, the film has grossed near about $200 million from its global collections. However, the movie should have done better commercially, many film industry veterans feel.
