Faberge egg rakes in record PS8.9m at auctionNovember 29th, 2007 - 3:59 pm ICT by admin
London, Nov 29 (ANI): A Faberge egg made for the Rothschild banking family has set a new world record after raking in a whopping 8.9 million pounds at an auction.
The Rothschild egg, made in 1905, was picked up by a private Russian art collector at Christies in London.
The gold and pink egg is just one of 12 in public hands known to have been produced to standards required by the Russian Imperial family.
It has a clock for a face and a diamond-encrusted cockerel that nods its head and flaps its wings on the stroke of each hour, reports the BBC .
The egg has never been seen in public before, and was previously only documented in private family records.
It was created by Peter Carl Faberge, as a gift to Germaine Halphen for her engagement to Baron de Rothschild in 1905.
Anthony Philips, international director of silver and Russian works of art at Christie’s, said the Rothschild Faberge Egg “encapsulates every characteristic that defines a true masterpiece”.
The previous record was set by The Faberge Winter Egg when it sold for 6.6 million pounds in 2002.
The sale also broke two other records: for the most expensive timepiece sold and the priciest Russian object. (ANI)
