Ex `Survivor’ producer arraigned in Mexico for wife’s murder
February 16th, 2012 - 12:16 pm ICT by IANSCancun (Mexico), Feb 16 (IANS/EFE) Former “Survivor” producer Bruce Beresford-Redman was arraigned here Wednesday on charges of murdering wife Monica Burgos during the family’s April 2010 vacation trip to this Mexican resort.
Beresford-Redman was arrested in the US and extradited from Los Angeles to Mexico last week, nearly two years after the producer reported his Brazilian wife missing to authorities in Cancun.
The body of Monica Burgos was found April 8, 2010, in an advanced state of decomposition, inside a septic tank some 80 meters from the Cancun hotel room the couple shares with their two children.
The producer of series such as “Survivor” and “Pimp My Ride”, who was not present at the hearing Wednesday, was placed in prison upon being notified of the charge of murdering his wife, defense attorney Jaime Cancino told EFE.
Judge Jenny Cajun ordered the defendant held without bail.
Cancino said that there was not enough evidence to link the producer with the murder.
In his initial statements, Beresford-Redman said his wife left the hotel and he had not seen her since then, and he had then filed a missing persons report on April 6, 2010.
The producer was arrested in November 2010 at his home in Rancho Palos Verdes, in western Los Angeles by US federal marshals.
After a lengthy process, US authorities determined that Mexican prosecutors had presented enough elements in the case for them to grant the extradition request.
Beresford-Redman was arrested in Cancun shortly after the disappearance of his wife, and his passport was confiscated, but in May 2010 he surfaced at his California home and said he had to return to the US to take care of his work responsibilities and his children.
