ESPY Awards 2009

p31The winners for the ESPY Awards 2009 have been announced in a grand ceremony this Wednesday, July 15 at the Nokia Theater, Los Angeles. Samuel L. Jackson, the famous Hollywood actor hosted the glittering show which saw some of the best athletes of the world come together under a single roof for the gala evening.

Michael Phelps, the US Olympic champion swimmer was the grand winner as he received three awards in total besides receiving the “Best Male Athlete” award. For the last five years it had been the golfing genius Tiger Woods who had won this title. For Phelps it is no mean feat to topple non other than Tiger Woods. Phelps also won the “Best Championship Performance” award for his performance in the Olympics. The Los Angeles Lakers were voted the “Best Team”.

Quite aptly the team’s manager/coach, Phil Jackson went home with the “Best Coach/Manager” award. Tim Tebow and Maya Moore were adjudged the “Best College Athlete”, male and female respectively, the former being for football while the later for basketball. Jason Lester and Erin Popovich emerged as a ray of hope for all humanity as they were given “Best Athlete with a Disability” awards for the male and female categories respectively.

One of the surprising events in the field of sports this year for US has been the United States soccer team beating Spain in the semifinals of the Confederations Cup. This performance didn’t go unnoticed as the US soccer team proudly went home with the “Best Upset” award.

The ESPY awards is an annual event which has been initiated by US TV network ESPN in the year 1993. Since then it has become one of the most eagerly awaited events in the arena of sports as every year it rewards exceptional athletes and teams for their breathtaking performances on the sports field. On July 19, ESPN would telecast the show for its viewers.
