Ellen DeGeneres: Liza Minnelli Speaks on Michael Jackson

Oct 11 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Liza Minnelli was a guest on ‘The Ellen DeGeneres Show’ today. Liza has been entertaining audiences all over the world for the past six decades. Her first movie role came when she was just eighteen months old. By the time she was a teenager, she was singing and dancing in films and made her Broadway debut when she was just nineteen. At sixty-five years old, Liza is still going strong. Liza has won an Emmy, a Grammy, and Oscar, and a Tony. Ellen jokingly told her that she is one of the very few persons to own an E.G.O.T. ( or all four of those awards.)

Liza told of her battle with encephalitis. She said that she laughed for three days, and no one seemed to think there was anything wrong with it. Then she found out that she had encephalitis of her brain, and that the doctors told her she would never walk and likely never talk again. After having sixteen seizures, the fact that she was even still alive was a miracle, Liza said. But she began to practice, or “rehearse” as she called it, each day. She did this with the talking and with the walking. It took her over a year and a half to learn to walk again.

Liza also spoke of the Michael Jackson trial. She said that she watched some of it, but then she turned it off when she realized that they are just making money off of it. Liza said that Michael never could do anything without someone wanting to make money off of it. Ellen asked Liza if she felt that way about herself, and her own childhood, and she said that surprisingly she did not. Liza explained that as she grew up, the acting and musical pursuits which she had were her own, and she did what she herself wanted to do. Michael did not have that choice. She knew Michael as a child, and added that he was a sponge for information and a wonderful conversationalist. He would come over and talk with her dad, and learn all that he could from it. “But then he would have to go back to whatever he went back to, and who knows what would happen, it was wrong,” Liza said, speaking of Michael’s childhood.
