Elle Macpherson under fire over illegal rhino remedy
July 6th, 2010 - 4:07 pm ICT by ANIMelbourne, July 06 (ANI): Australian model Elle Macpherson has been criticised for promoting illegal rhino horns as a form of Chinese medicine therapy.
The 47-year-old Aussie has been slammed for encouraging the use of powdered rhino horn that is a traditional Chinese medicine remedy banned worldwide by the Convention on Trade in Endangered Species.

“Put it this way, it works for me,” Macpherson said when asked about why she uses the powder in an interview with Times Online via Twitter.
She also said that the rhino horn tasted ‘a little bit like crushed bone and fungus in a capsule but it does the job though.’
“The Humane Society International condemns the poaching of rhinos, particularly for their use in beauty products and Ms Macpherson’s actions are reprehensible,” Beynon said.
The International Fund for Animal Welfare has prepared an information brochure to send to Macpherson to educate her on the situation of the rhino and the use of alternative traditional medicines after her shocking comments, reports News.com.au.
“Elle needs to take responsibility for her comments and encourage people to look to sustainable alternative medicines,” Erica Martin, the organisation’s Asia-Pacific director, said.
“Powdered rhino horn, such as Elle MacPherson uses, is not cheap: last year one kilo was worth approximately $60,000, nearly $20,000 more than a kilo of gold,” Erica added. (ANI)
