Elaine May name has made a come back after the Emmy Awards that took the spotlight yesterday. Elaine May and Mike Nichols revolutionized the landscape of American comedy through perfecting the art of improvisation and introducing it to the public.
Elaine is a two-time Academy Award nominated director, screenwriter and actress. She achieved her greatest fame, in the 1950s, from her improvisational comedy routines in partnership with Mike Nichols.
Elaine May was born in Philadelphia. She was the daughter of the theatre director and actor Jack Berlin and actress Ida Berlin. Elaine occasionally performed with her father in the Yiddish Theater which he ran. In 1942, the family moved to Los Angeles. Elaine
Married Marvin May in the late 1940s as a teenager and gave birth to a daughter, actress Jeanie Berlin in 1949. She divorced in 1972 and got married again, this time to lyricist Sheldon Harnick but divorced a year later.
Her name drifted into the media after Alec Baldwin named Tina Fey as the modern-day Elaine May. Present in the awards wee Emmy host with fellow nominees Howie Mandel, Ryan Seacrest, Tom Bergeron and Heidi Klum. Other mentioned names included Candace Bergen, Bryan Cranston, Jennifer Morrison, and Suzanne Pleshette.
