Earth 2100: A picture we would rather not faceJune 3rd, 2009 - 6:25 pm ICT by GD
On Tuesday night, 2nd June, at 9 p.m. (ET) ABC showed a special program which presents a grim picture of the global environmental scenario. The program was named as “Earth 2100″ and it was hosted by ABC correspondent, Bob Woodruff. This unsettling program of two hours depicted the future of the Earth amidst bursting population, climatic change, resource depletion and other declining environmental conditions. The program also shows the possible effects of the environmental catastrophe that human beings are causing.
In the course of the show, Woodruff talks with a number of experts in their respective fields to get a holistic view of the situation. With the help of the experts Woodruff tried to highlight the idea that ‘the end of the world’ is not a myth. Rather, given the current trends, we are in for some very serious trouble. In the show, Woodruff interviewed John Holdern, who is also the Science Advisor to President Barack Obama. In the show Holdern too conformed to the idea and said, “If we continue on the business as usual trajectory, there will be a tipping point that we cannot avert. We will indeed drive the car over the cliff.”
ABC’s “Earth 2100″ had an impressive list of planetary futurists. Along with John Holdern there were a number of other experts like Thomas Homer-Dixon, Janine Benyus, Joseph Tainter and many more. The experts made it clear that we will have to change our attitude towards our environment to have a better future. The show put forward the “idea that most of us would rather not face.”
