District 9: A Fresh Perspective On Science Fiction

District 9 is not your average run-of-the-mill alien vs man movie, rather it surprises with its depth of plot and handling of the finer nuances inspite of being a science fiction thriller. Director Neill Blomkamp has managed to do in this movie which many of his accomplished predecessors have failed to do. That is to underline the presence of emotions and soul in a so called science fiction story.

The movie District 9 is based upon one of Blomkamp’s documentaries which goes by the name “Alive in Joburg”. Accomplished film director Peter Jackson is the producer of District 9 and going by the plethora of positive reactions it has been receiving across media, it can be safely assumed that Jackson has backed the right horse for this project. Jackson, an accomplished director himself could also claim to be a clever producer as the budget for this movie has been $30 million only, a sum which is lesser than almost any other production in Hollywood and specially in context of a science fiction film.

To start with, the aliens in the movie are not portrayed as villains and that’s quite a fresh outlook for any science fiction movie! As the plot unfolds, it is shown that due to certain circumstances many aliens are ghettoized and eventually banished to a place even far off. The film is based in South Africa and it is not unnatural for anyone to think of the infamous Apartheid era in this context. It is being said in the expert circles that Blomkamp’s attempt at giving human touch to a science fiction story would add a different angle to the movie and that the movie would turn out to be a momentous one.
