DGA Awards Press RoomJan 31, (THAINDIAN NEWS) After much anticipation and speculation among Hollywood insiders, director Kathryn Bigelow has managed to bag the Director’s Guild award for her movie ‘The Hurt Locker’. It was a tough fight for her. Her movie was pitted against James Cameron’s 3D magnum opus ‘Avatar’, that is creating new box office records worldwide. It is being said that Kathryn Bigelow has become the first female director to win this coveted award. Another heavyweight contender was ace director Quentin Tarantino, who wooed the viewers with his latest flick ‘Inglorious Basterds’. However, Kathryn Bigelow managed to beat them all and this win makes her a likely contender for the soon to be announced Academy Awards nominations.

The director expressed her surprise and joy at receiving the honor on Saturday. As per the trends, the DGA winners also bag the Oscar awards. However, her win at the Director’s Guild Awards 2010 has put the fate of other directors and their movies in the upcoming Academy awards in an uncertain position. James Cameron is considered as one of the stalwart directors of Hollywood and his Avatar has every chances of recreating the Titanic magic. One has to consider the fact that his movie won two top awards in the recently held Golden Globe awards.

The Academy awards can be unpredictable and it has a history of bestowing the honors on the most overlooked nominations. Avatar has won the heart of the viewers and critics alike but its strength lies in the spectacular visual effects and CGI but not so much in characterization. That is where The Hurt Locker can give it some serious competition.
