diane The news from the ABC news camp is that ABC World News anchor Charles Gibson is going to step down from his professional duties in the January of 2010. The person to fill in his shoes for the show will be Diane Sawyer. This news has been announced by the ABC networks on Wednesday.

This is move is being considered by many to be a gamble, the shifting of the enigmatic Sawyer from the “Good Morning America” stable might jeopardize the stake, creating a vacuum that might prove hard to fill up. One assurance lies in the fact that even Gibson had made a switch to the evening slot from the GMA in 2006 and since then has had a hugely successful run, winning a lot of credential critical praise as well as ruling the roost in the ratings (he had been placed second at that).

Gibson had approached the ABC News President David Westin about two months ago, stating that he was considering stepping down from his responsibilities. It has been revealed that Gibson has always considered Sawyer to step in his shoes. Therefore, when he had made his decision final, he had approached Sawyer with the proposal. Sawyer gave her nod agreement on Tuesday night.

In the year 2006, when Katie Couric had become the first female solo news anchor at the CBS network, Sawyer had also been a contender for the anchor slot. With this announcement being made, the other question climbing the ladder of the grapevine is, who is going replace Sawyer on Good Morning America, after the switch.
