w0000213Jan 31, (THAINDIAN NEWS) The expectation of the viewers regarding the possible contenders for this year’s Oscar awards is running high. Every year the academy awards ceremony is preceded by a series of other important film awards like the Golden Globe Awards and Directors Guild Awards. The winners in these award categories have a high chance of winning the Oscar awards too. This has been the trend for the last few years. This year everyone’s attention is on James Cameron’s 3D extravaganza Avatar which critics have admitted have set a new standard in movie making. It has already won the Golden Globe and earned nomination for the Bafta Awards. However, Avatar did not fare well in the recently held Directors Guild of America award.

The winner was director Kathryn Bigelow’s The Hurt Locker which was said to be an unlikely contender for the top slot. Her win has taken many viewers by surprise as the film cannot match Avatar in terms of business or popularity. She even beat the critically acclaimed Inglorious Basterds, directed by stalwart director Quentin Tarantino. However, this win has bolstered the chances of director Kathryn Bigelow to get nominated for the Academy awards. She is incidentally the ex-spouse of James Cameron.

Her win was not the only thing that drew media attention at the Directors Guild Awards 2010 ceremony. Hollywood’s hottest power couple “Brangelina”, who are reportedly on their way to separation, was seen together at the awards ceremony. This left the media and viewers guessing whether they are splitting up or not after all.
