Daphne Selfe is Past 80, and She’s a Supermodel

Daphne Selfe has got four grandchildren but she has not hung up her stilettos. She has never had any cosmetic surgery and earns up to £1000 a day working for designers like Dolce & Gabbana. In 1950 when she started walking the ramp she weighed 10 stone and had a perfect 36-24-36 body. Today at past 80 she weighs eight and a half stone and still has that 36-24-36 body. She works for Models 1 agency and has appeared in Vogue and Marie Claire. She has also faced the cameras of the likes of Mario Testino, Nick Knight and David Bailey. But her modeling career took off after she turned grey, unabashedly.

Says the octogenarian, “Other younger models admire me but they’re not jealous as I’m not a threat. I have a niche all of my own. I don’t feel a day over 60. It’s fantastic. I’ll continue modelling until they stop asking. It love it. It’s fun and keeps me young. I was never one for wild parties and I’ve never had any need to get drunk.”

She was discovered while she was working in the fashion department of John Lewis in Reading in 1950. She took part in a modeling competition and then was photographed by established photographer Gilbert Adams. As a last minute fill in for a show she proved to be a success and was signed on by the agency.

Marriage and children did not put an end to her career and she went on to model for Dolce & Gabbana, Gap, Nivea, Olay and was in Vogue and Marie Claire. She attributes the secret to her career to yoga and a diet of fruits, vegetables and fish and lots of water. Of a lot of models trying to look too thin she says, “Some girls are naturally slim, like Lily Cole, but others take it too far and just look ill and gaunt. There should be a far wider spread of body shapes but at the end of day, the clothes must look good too. It’s tricky.”
