San Francisco, Nov. 13 (THAINDIAN NEWS) The International Documentary Association is going to screen a special tribute to two journalists of Current Media, Laura Ling and Euna Lee in a short documentary titled “Courage Under Fire”. The documentary will be screened at the International Documentary Awards 2009. The documentary is a tribute to the two journalists who had spent 140 days in the custody of North Korean soldiers who had arrested them while they were filming a documentary about the trafficking of the women in that country.
The two women had been filming a documentary on the illegal trafficking of women in North Korea that takes place along the Tumen River. they were spotted and captured by North Korean students and put on trial on the basis of committing illegal activities. They were sentenced to 12 years in prison and subject to inhuman torture. They had to bear 140 days of the hellish torture before they were granted a release. In addition to the ingenuous methods of torture that the prisons inflicted on it’s inmates- the rice they had to eat used to be garnished with rocks- the two journalists lived in the constant fear of being transported to “Hell on Earth”, a village for convicted criminals that thoroughly lived up to it’s name.
Laura and Euna obtained freedom after much negotiations between the heads of states of the two countries. The International Documentary Association raises a toast to the undaunted spirit of the two remarkable women in it’s documentary “Courage Under Fire.” The documentary is a tribute to all the filmmakers and journalists who have shown indomitable courage even in the face of the greatest despair and fear.
