Los Angeles, Oct 13 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Michael Jackson lived in controversy, was scandalized almost all his life as a pop icon and his death, of suspected drug overdose is still mired in controversy, which is yet to be totally clear. And after his death too, he is still engulfed in controversy.
This latest controversy happened when yesterday the Michael Jackson estate and Sony released his supposedly new single ‘This is it’ for public consumption. Within hours of being released it became an online hit and was getting engulfed in controversy too, as some fans recognized it another song that had been recorded 18 years ago by an obscure Puerto Rican singer.
Moreover the co-author of that tune, “My Way” songwriter Paul Anka, threatened to sue Jackson’s estate for proper credit and his fair share of royalties.
The administrators of the estate quickly acknowledged Anka’s claims when they realized that Anka had proof and they themselves were on shaky ground. They immediately agreed to grant him 50 percent of the copyright, which is a potentially massive payday for the 68-year-old Canadian crooner. And an equally massive loss for the Michael Jackson estate.
“They realize it’s a mistake, they realize it’s my song, they realize it’s my production of his vocal in my studio and I am getting 50 percent of the whole project, actually, which is fair,” Anka said in a video posted on the TMZ gossip Web site.
The song was apparently co-written by Anka and Jackson in 1983, but then the pair fell out. A demo, with only Jackson’s vocal and piano, was found in a box of tapes after his death. It was over-dubbed by Jackson’s brothers to the demo recording and the single was released yesterday on Jackson’s official Web site.
