Colombian Salsa great Alvaro Jose Arroyo dies
July 27th, 2011 - 12:19 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattBaranquilla, Columbia, July 26 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Famous Columbia salsa dancer and singer Alvaro Jose Arroyo has died at the age of 56. Arroyo who was famously called Joe Arroyo around the world reportedly died on Tuesday morning at a hospital in Baranquilla.
Family members reported that Arroyo has been in the hospital for a month now. He was hospitalized for complicated health problems and he has been at the hospital since the 27th of June. Coincidentally, Arroyo died on the same day that it was announced that he was going to be honored.
Arroyo was named as a recipient of the Latin Recording Academy’s Lifetime Achievement Award. The death of Arroyo is being mourned in Columbia and the country’s president, Juan Manuel Santos took to Twitter with his emotions. After paying glowing tribute to the 56-year-old, Santos wrote that the death of the dancer is “a great loss for music and for Colombia.”
Arroyo suffered from various complications including heart problems and kidney failure. On Tuesday morning his achievement as a dancer and singer was recognized when he was named among the group of recipients in the Latin Grammys which will take place in November.
During his career, Arroyo came out with more than 150 songs.
