June 22, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): China has organized a month long event and an exhibition, where India will showcase their journey of cinema. This will be done to mark 60 years of diplomatic ties between the two neighboring countries.
The inauguration will take place on June 24 at the Broadway Cinematheque Moma in Beijing. Then, it will take a trip to Chongqing from July 6 to 12 and to Guangzhou from July 16 to 22.
The history of Indian cinema, starting from the silent era of the 1913 to contemporary Bollywood, will be presented at an exhibition, which is a part of the festival. The exhibition will show how Bollywood has turned into a billion dollar industry globally and also an Asian entertainment giant.
The inauguration function will be graced by a 20 member delegation from the Industry, which includes big names like Yash Chopra, Manmohan Shetty, Aparna Sen, Rahul Bose and Bobby Bedi among others.
Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) is hosting the festival along with an NGO, “Routes to Roots’.
The exhibition has divided the 10 movies in three sections- the silent era, contemporary era and the golden era.
Rakesh Gupta, director of “Routes to Roots’, said, “The journey of Indian cinema will be depicted through posters, collages and audio visual footages. This will include the first silent feature film Raja Harishchandra in 1913, which was made by Dadasaheb Phalke and will be followed by the talkie Alam Ara in 1931.”
He added, “The Bollywood hit film Oye Lucky Lucky Oye will be shown at the inauguration of the festival, which will be followed by the regional films selected by the Directorate of Film Festival.”
Gupta also informed that a book on Indian Cinema in Chinese will be launched to make the Chinese people aware of the rich legacy of Indian cinema
