China acts tough on websites with illegal download offers
April 26th, 2011 - 12:11 pm ICT by IANSBeijing, April 26 (IANS) At least 14 Chinese websites that offer music downloads without having the permission to do so will be “punished”, the cultural ministry has said.
The illegal music providers includes the Baidu website that offers many services like a Chinese search engine, audio files, images and an online collaborative encyclopaedia.
BaiduMP3 and 13 other sites continued to provide download services for unregistered “illicit” music, even after repeated warnings not to do so, a ministry official was quoted as saying by China Daily.
The ministry previously punished 54 music websites in March “in line with the country’s internet regulations”, the official said.
The ministry also announced it would punish 20 online gaming companies, which use “vulgar” promotional methods.
