Cheryl Cole’s accent leaves 80pc Brits confused
August 6th, 2010 - 12:11 pm ICT by ANILondon, Aug 6 (ANI): Singer Cheryl Cole’s accent confuses 80 percent of Brits, according to a new survey.
The poll by Bristol University researchers revealed that the Girls Aloud beauty and her fellow Geordies are the hardest people to understand.
Eight in 10 of Brits are confused by the Tyneside accent, researchers found.
The poll found 82 per cent of Britons cannot tell what Geordies such as her and TV presenters Ant and Dec are on about half the time.
The Scouse accent from Liverpool is the second most likely to bamboozle us. It was cited by 81 per cent in the poll of 6,000 adults.
Scots such as comedian Billy Connolly are said to be the third hardest group to follow, at 75 per cent. Brummies confuse 66 per cent and Cockneys only 60 per cent.
Psychologist Dr Peter Collett said regional dialects make life even more confusing.
“If a Geordie describes you as canny, they may mean it as a compliment but if a Scot says the same they may mean you’re sneaky,” the Daily Express quoted him as saying. (ANI)
