London, April 19 (IANS) Veteran singer Cher’s daughter Chastity, who underwent a sex change operation, proudly showed off new girlfriend Jennifer Elia at an award function.

Now known as Chaz Bono, Chastity began the surgical process to change gender in March last year, and has since ditched the feminine blonde locks and floral dresses.

“I didn’t have a clue he used to be Cher’s daughter - they look nothing alike. I didn’t know who he was,” express.co.uk quoted an onlooker at the 21st GLAAD Media Awards in Los Angeles, promoting lesbian, gays and bisexuals working in the arts, as saying.

Chaz Bono had earlier said that this is the “best decision” of his life, adding: “I’ve struggled a lot getting here. If by being public other people can see this and not have to struggle as much as I did, then I’m happy to do that.”

Last autumn he said in an interview: “Gender is between your ears, not between your legs. I’ve felt male as far back as I can remember. As a child it was really clear. I felt like a boy.”

Chaz came out as a lesbian at 18 when he was at New York University.
