Cheo Feliciano to join Dominican singer for his new album
July 7th, 2011 - 11:25 am ICT by IANSSan Juan, July 7 (IANS/EFE) Dominican singer Johnny Ventura said Wednesday that he will record a song for his new album, “Recojan, el viejo esta en la calle”, along with Puerto Rican salsa performer Cheo Feliciano.
Ventura said at a press conference where the third edition of the Brugal Merengue Festival of Puerto Rico, where he is to be honoured, was announced that he admires Feliciano for his romantic music.
The 55-year veteran of the music business thanked festival organisers for recognising his career, and particularly for doing so in Puerto Rico, which played a key role in popularising merengue internationally.
“It’s the cause of a lot of satisfaction (for me) that I’m being honoured. I feel very happy that they’re making this tribute to me in Puerto Rico,” Ventura said.
The singer already recorded one salsa song last year with Puerto Rican Gilberto Santa Rosa, “Hay que dejarse de vaina”.
Besides Ventura, the Puerto Rican merengue band Grupo Mania will be honoured at the Brugal Festival, which will kick off July 17 in San Juan’s Hiram Bithorn stadium.
The director of the Department of Culture for the municipality of San Juan, singer Lunna Garcia, said that the festival had managed to collect $30,000 for Casa Cuna, which provides a shelter for homeless children.
