Canon EOS 50D vs. 40D

September 24, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): When you look at it the first time $300 price difference between Canon EOS 50D and EOS40D does not seem justified at all. On the surface it looks like Canon simply increased the Megapixels, updated the image processor and packaged some minor tweaks into a body that still looks like EOS 40D. The EOS 50D has a15.1 Megapixel sensor but the size is same as the EOS 40D which means the camera will have more noise.

The EOS 50D got a higher image quality score in the digital camera tests that we conducted and the sensor showed very good color saturation and accuracy under all flash and sunlight. The ISO tests between EOS 40D and EOS 50D were inconclusive because both the camera came up with exact same scores. Both the cameras produced unacceptable images at ISO3200 so we stuck with ISO 1600 as the standard testing platform. While EOS 40D tops out at ISO3200, EOS 50D can manage as much as ISO 12800.

As we mentioned earlier, both the cameras look similar but the EOS 50D is easier to handle and has some tweaks that adds functionality. The 50D has a dedicated Live View button unlike 40D. The 50D also ships with a dust reduction system that helps you keep the dust and grime away from your precious camera. Both the cameras have a 9 point focus system.

Judging by the initial review we can safely assume that EOS 50 D is nothing but a minor facelift from EOS 40D so if you are cash strapped EOS 40D might still do the trick for you.
