Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ now the third highest grossing film of all time in US
January 18th, 2010 - 1:54 pm ICT by ANILondon, Jan 18 (ANI): James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’ has shot past ‘Star Wars’ to become the third highest-grossing film of all time in the US.
The sci-fi saga topped the domestic box office for the fifth weekend in a row after raking in 41.3 million dollars.
20th Century Fox’s ‘Avatar’ has now raised its domestic total to 491.8 million dollars and is expected to top 500 million dollars after revenues are counted on the Martin Luther King Day holiday on Monday.
The film lifted its total to 1.6 billion dollars worldwide, second only to Cameron’s last film, 1997’s ‘Titanic,’ at 1.8 billion dollars.
“One guy makes two movies in 10 years, and they’re by far the biggest movies of all time. That’s remarkable,” the Telegraph quoted Chris Aronson, head of distribution for the studio, as saying.
Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at US and Canadian theatres, according to Hollywood.com.
1. Avatar, $41.3 million
2. The Book of Eli, $31.6 million
3. The Lovely Bones, $17.1 million
4. Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Squeakquel, $11.5 million
