Cameron Douglas sentenced to 5 years in jail

New York, Apr 21 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Michael Douglas’ son – Cameron Douglas has been sentenced to 5 years in jail. Manhattan federal judge Richard Berman delivered the verdict, and also scolded the family. He said that the ‘plea for mercy’ letters that he had gotten from the family members didn’t cut ice. He added that there were too many excuses in the letters for the drug addict Cameron. He said very bluntly that, “Get beyond and get over that idea … that Cameron Douglas is a victim.”
The judge also noted that while Cameron was jailed, he was off drugs and alcohol. And this was the longest time since he was 13 years old, that he was bereft of these things. He also defended his decision of not granting him bail, because he said that if he had granted him bail, then Cameron would have gone back to drugs and alcohol. He tried to counsel Cameron and said that, his prison stint is his “last chance to make it.”
When the verdict was delivered then Cameron’s father Michael Douglas was seated in the second row and he tried to hide his surprise and disappointment over the verdict, as his face was totally stoic, through out the sentencing. Besides Michael, his actress wife Catherine Zeta-Jones, and Cameron’s grandfather Kirk Douglas were also present at the sentencing.
