Canadian actress and model Lisa Ray (Bollywood/Hollywood) has cancer.
She has been diagnosed with Multiple Myeloma and has started her cycle of treatment.
Lisa, 37, wants to share all her experience fighting with cancer and talks about her medication in details in her witty-chatty blog. She writes that when she got the news, “I didn’t react and I didn’t cry”. “That’s how I felt after the diagnosis. Ok, I’ve got The Cancer. The tough part is over,” she adds.
Lisa further writes in her blog: “Myeloma is incurable…I believe it can be cured…That’s the Dirty Realist in me…I’m aiming for Full Remission…I am humbled and inspired.”
Although Lisa believes in alternative treatments/medication, but right now she has chosen not to mix therapies. She is going through chemotherapy, which will finish in end of October and is aiming for a stem cell transplant and to be symptom free by December. Her treatments reportedly include heavy doses of dexamethasone and other steroids.
Lisa has been practicing yoga for about ten years; goes to Dharamsala (India) for month long silent meditation retreats once a year; chants mantras for hours; practices various meditation techniques; considers herself a student of many spiritual traditions; and goes for ayurvedic retreats.
Cancer begins when cells in a part of the body start to grow out of control. Multiple Myeloma, a relatively uncommon cancer, is formed by malignant plasma cells. In USA, the lifetime risk of getting Multiple Myeloma is one in 161. Myeloma is said to be incurable, but remissions may be induced with steroids, chemotherapy, thalidomide and stem cell transplants.
VFCC Award winner Lisa has acted in about two-dozen films. Her father is Bengali while mother was Polish. She is being named as Ambassador for campaign for the rights of girls around the world.
