Blue Valentine gets a NC-17 rating
October 16th, 2010 - 12:12 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattLos Angeles, Oct 15 (THAINDIAN NEWS) For being rated NC-17, the chances of Blue Valentine making the Oscars have seriously been dealt a severe blow.
The Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA) gave the movie the rating after it reviewed it but the company behind the movie wants to see that rating removed.
The NC-17 rating means that anyone below the age of 17 cannot watch the movie and that is bad news for the movie. For the starters, the movie’s premiere gross is set to greatly dip as a result of the restriction. The number of people who can watch the movie will reduce as well and thereby seriously affect the movie’s chances of making an Oscar.
The rating was issued earlier this week and critics of the ratings question why the movie should be rated like that.
MPAA however feel that a sex scene in the movie warrants the rating the movie had. That does not convince the Weinstein Company who contests that the movie barley contains any nudity.
The company has appealed the rating and it seems fair to state here that it was the Weinstein Company that got the NC-17 rating introduced some 20 years ago.
